WEBINAR "Colóquio-PPGFIS-UFES" no dia 23/09 - quinta-feira

O título de seu colóquio é: “Random lasers - excellent platforms to study nanophotonics and complex systems

Resumo:
Random Lasers (RLs) are different from conventional lasers in that the feedback for obtaining optical amplification due to stimulated emission is not provided by optical cavities with mirrors or diffraction gratings. Indeed, the operation of the RLs is possible thanks to the scattering of light in disordered micro- or nano-structures that act as light emitters or scatters randomly positioned within a luminescent medium. Due to their specific characteristics, the richness of the physical phenomena contributing for their operation, and their simple experimental confirmation, RLs currently attract great interest for basic and applied research. In this talk I will present basic ideas related to the RLs operation showing how highly disordered systems can be used to achieve efficient random lasing. A variety of physical systems that allow operation of RLs emitting from ultraviolet to infrared will be considered. RLsbased on one, two and three photon absorption,in organic and inorganic media, will be discussed. Analogies between RLs and complex systems studied by Statistical Physics methods will also be analyzed. In particular, I will discuss analogies with Spin-Glasses (the spin-glass behavior of light) and the observation of Photonic Phase-Transitions characterized by studying the intensity fluctuations of RLs. In summary, I intend to show in this talk that the research on RLs is at the cross-roads of nanophotonics and complex systems, being quite multi-disciplinary in nature and offers many possibilities for basic and applied research.
